Smedley D. Butler, “The Fighting Quaker,” was a major general, two-time Medal of Honor recipient, and the only Marine officer awarded both two Medals of Honor and the Marine Corps Brevet Medal. From China and Central America to Veracruz and Haiti, Butler built a reputation for hard fighting, blunt honesty, and a refusal to compromise his principles. After retiring in 1931, he became an author and outspoken critic of war profiteering.
